“Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
In 1943 Sister Lela Callies organized a Sunday School in her home. This was a success, so on March 14, 1944, she and her husband, Rev. M. A. Callies invited a small group of worshipper to their home at 930 W. Little York and organized a church. The church was named Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev. Callies was selected as the Pastor and Rev. Isom Lewis, Asst. Pastor. At this time, a secretary was named, Bible Training Union (B.T.U) was created and a Deacon Board established. Auxiliaries created were, Mission Society and Ushers.
Shortly after they organized, the church moved from the Callies home to the fire station on Wall Street. On July 17, 1944 they purchased the property in the 900 block of Glenn Street.
In 1945, Rev. A. V. Johnson became Pastor on Rev. Callies recommendation. Rev. Johnson was succeeded by Rev. F. J. Thompson. The foundation for the building was laid on Glenn Street, and services were held on Calvin Street in a tent.
In 1946 Rev. T. R. Roberts was call to pastor the church. Under his leadership the church moved from the tent to the new structure on Glenn Street.
Rev. Roberts departed and Rev. Gussie Grant was called to pastor in 1947. The membership declined after Rev. Roberts’ departure, so Rev. Grant put into action an organized effort to unite the declining membership.
In spring 1956, the church was torn down. Worship services were held on the dirt floors of the cafeteria during the rebuilding process. In March 1957 the new structure was dedicated.
Under Pastor Grant’s leadership the congregation continued to grow, but the existing structure began to deteriorate. It was evident a new structure was needed. On July 25, 1982 the Ground Breaking Ceremony was held. September 28, 1982 the foundation was poured, and on October 3, 1983 we were blessed with a new sanctuary. The dedication service was held October 10, 1983.
Rev. Grant pastored the church for forty-six years. Under his leadership the following auxiliaries were organized: Junior Church, Junior Usher Board, Junior Choir (Sunshine Choir), Starlight, Shepherd Boys League, Mission Chorus, Mission #2, Young Adult Choir (G. G. Grant Gospel Chorus), Nurses Board, Deaconess Board, Pastor’s Aide, Young Ladies Mission, Training Union, Brotherhood and Bible Class. He inaugurated Family and Friends Day, Annual Women’s Day and accompanied with a banquet. The congregation grew to five hundred members under his leadership.
Pastor Grant departed March 10, 1993 and an Associate Pastor, Rev. Calvin O. Randle was call to pastor the church on June 28, 1993. Under his leadership the following was formed: The Institute and Academy, Drill Team, Praise Dance groups, Baccalaureate Service, Women Retreat, Easter Breakfast, distribution of food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas and The Cynthia Wade Scholarship Fund.
Pastor Randle resigned as the Under Shepherd on December 31, 2016 after twenty three years of service. Upon his resignation a Pastor Search Committee was formed to start the process. After many months of prayer and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God sent us Reverend Henry D. Lewis Jr.
Our new Pastor Henry D. Lewis Jr. was selected and was installed on September 10, 2017. Under his leadership guided by the Holy Spirit the following ministries were organized: Culinary Arts Ministry, Family Night in the Word, Seniors Ministry, Sick and Bereavement Ministry, Leadership Luncheon, Men and Women Conference, Website Committee, College Care Ministry, just to name a few.
